Parishioners Elected to National Office of the UOL - 07/30/2023
The 76th UOL Convention, held in Scranton / Wilkes-Barre, PA concluded on Sunday July 30th with Divine Liturgy at St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Scranton and a Farewell Brunch in St. Michael's Church Hall. At the convention, several members of our Philadelphia Junior and Senior chapters were elected to the the Ukrainian Orthodox League National Executive Board. Senior Board members from Philadelphia are Natalie Bilynsky, 1st Vice President and Oleh Bilynsky, Financial Secretary. Andrea Swan serves on the board as Convention Chair for the next UOL Convention, to be held here in Philadelphia. Mia Zetick was elected President of the Junior UOL National Executive Board! Congratulations to all!
Our Senior UOL Chapter honored with Senior UOL Achievement Award - 07/30/2023
At the 76th convention of the Ukrainian Orthodox League of the USA, our Senior UOL Chapter (St. Vladimir Philadelphia) was awarded the Senior Achievement Award for their outstanding work in 2022-2023. Our Senior UOL hosted the Thanksgiving Dinner, donating proceeds to All Saints Camp, hosted the Holodna Kutya and Theophany breakfast in January, sponsored social fellowship outings, and more. Congratulations to our Sr. UOL Chapter President, Natalie Bilynsky for her organizational efforts that resulted in our chapter being selected for this honor and to Father Taras Naumenko for his strong support of the UOL! May our organization continue to grow and support the Church!

The Jenkintown Food Cupboard (food pantry) has been seeing many Ukrainians coming in for food each week. They could use some Ukrainian speakers (who also speak a little English) to volunteer at the pantry to better communicate with the Ukrainians. The food pantry is located at the Jenkintown United Methodist Church, 328 Summit Avenue, Jenkintown, PA. They are open Tuesdays from 5:30PM - 7PM and Thursdays from 12:15PM - 2:15PM. Hope Fund donations of clothing ON HOLD - 11/04/2022
Due to space limitations, we are putting a HOLD on receiving any more clothing donations for our St. Martin's Closet donation area of the church hall. We will let you know when we can take in more clothing. We still do need kitchen items, new sheets, new bed pillows, and gently used bed coverings (duvets, comforters, bedspreads, quilts). We are also still in need of $25 gift cards for places like Walmart, Target, Giant, Shop Rite, Bell's Market, and of course cash donations are much appreciated.
Our Sisterhood and friends will be making varenyky this Saturday, September 17th, beginning at 9AM. All are welcome to come and help! Help is very much appreciated!
Hope Fund Report - Your donations at work: as of August 9, 2022
- In July, we sent 100 bottles of water purification pills to Ukraine. This week, we ordered 100 more bottles.
- This week, we ordered 100 chest seals, 50 CAT tourniquets, and 75 more Stop the Bleed kits. Once received, they will be shipped to Ukraine.
- We sent a donation of another $1000 to a program in Poltava that feeds the children and the elderly.
- Our Philadelphia Ukrainian Orthodox League chapter has purchased school supplies for 25 refugee children in the Philadelphia area
- Multiple refugee families have been visiting the parish hall to pick up items that have been donated.
- We were asked to provide a stroller for an expectant mother from Ukraine and were able to acquire TWO strollers; one for this mother and another for a future donation. Additional clothing and diapers were donated to the expectant mother.
- We are officially naming our church hall donation area "St. Martin's Closet", as at least one other UOC parish has. St. Martin the Merciful was known to give the clothes off his back to the needy. Organization efforts continue to keep the area in good order.
- We are organizing an effort to provide translation service, particularly for refugee parents sending their children to school. Council of the Metropolia Issues a Statement - 03/06/2022

Our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA Council of the Metropolia met on 24-25 February, 2022 at Metropolitan John (Theodorovych) Memorial Library for its annual budgetary sessions. The library is in the Consistory Administrative building located at our Metropolia Center in Somerset, NJ. This was the first “in-person” meeting of the Council since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, which should have been a joyful experience. Unfortunately, however, the invasion of Ukraine by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation began the day before the meeting opened. In spite of the turbulent news and the great sadness for the Council members, the meeting proceeded as planned opening with a Moleben to the Birth-Giver of God for her protection of the people – the nation – of Ukraine.
Before the Council moved into the scheduled topics of the day, a lengthy discussion ensued with the members asking Metropolitan Antony and Archbishop Daniel to share with them every bit of information they had about the conditions in Ukraine, especially regarding if and how the Ukrainian government and the population can face the overwhelming threat confronting them in a Russian army that so greatly exceeds their own and whose weapons seem so much more powerful, as well. Our hierarchs encouraged the Council members to remain positive in their outlook about the invasion. The people of Ukraine have powerful motivation because of their profound unity in opposition to the Russian Federation’s delusions about a “Russian World” or a recreated Soviet Union.
The Council of the Metropolia devoted a great deal of time to discussion about the ways it could support their brothers and sisters in Ukraine. The members were as surprised as most of the world about the level of the Ukrainian army’s defense during the first days of the invasion. They vowed to return to their home parishes, cities and towns to participate in any events that bring the truth to those communities about Ukraine, her people and the historical lies expounded by Vladimir Putin.
The Council did, after long discussions about Ukraine, effectively complete its planned agenda. Reports of all Consistory Officers, Offices of Ministry, Financial Officers, Audit Commission, St. Sophia Seminary, All Saints Camp, the Ukrainian Orthodox League, St. Andrew Society, the Guardians of the Metropolia, the Ukrainian History and Education Center, plans for the 23rd Regular Sobor in October, Inter-Church Relations (the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops, the Permanent Conference of Ukrainian Orthodox Bishops Beyond the Borders of Ukraine), a very important discussion about our property management and future concerns and finally, the Budget in consideration of all the above. We have many issues on the horizon concerning the life of our Church. These will be presented to all parishes through their representatives – delegates to the 23rd Regular Sobor.
“The Council of the Metropolia, meeting in its annual session on 24-25 February 2022, was profoundly saddened and affected by the unjustifiable and unlawful invasion of our beloved Ukraine – a sovereign and independent nation recognized as such by the entire world – by the armed forces of the Russian Federation at the direction of its President, Vladimir Putin. As justification for his (and his alone) decision to invade Ukraine, Mr. Putin presented a completely false version of history linking Kyivan-Rus (Ukraine) and Rosiya (English – Russia). He further accused the Ukrainian nation of anti-Semitism with plans to develop nuclear weapons, among other falsehoods. We condemn Mr. Putin for the complete lack of truth in every part of his justification and for the truth about his invasion – his desire to rebuild his beloved, but thoroughly failed Soviet Union. We condemn the silence of Russian government and spiritual leaders who know this truth but by their silence condemn perhaps thousands or millions of innocent Ukrainian people to death or serious injury. This is nothing new for the governments of the Russian Federation and/or the Soviet Union. The history of Ukraine is replete with genocide and crimes against humanity committed by them against the population of Ukraine.
We strongly urge all members of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, South America and the Diaspora to speak out boldly in support of the once again suffering Ukrainian nation – her government, armed forces and her people. We urge all freedom loving people to exhibit their support for the people of Ukraine not only in prayers and thoughts, but to take to the streets demanding that their elected government officials seek every possible way of supporting them with whatever they need to survive. We urge all members of our church and beyond to contribute to the fund-raising efforts on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church official website: uocofusa.org and on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA Facebook page. Every penny of donations received through these efforts will go to the aid of wounded armed forces members and their families, to those suffering the consequences of the invasion with destroyed churches, homes and injuries and to those forced to become refugees in neighboring countries. We have the means and methods of providing this aid and we pray that it is plentiful.
We members of the Council of the Metropolia join citizens of the world in hundreds of cities, towns and villages throughout the world who have already gathered to manifest their prayers and support to the Ukrainian people. May our loving God in the Holy Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – receive our prayerful petitions sending the legions of angels commanded by Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Kyiv, to crush the ambitions of the aggressors.”

As the sun rose over the Znamyanka Orphanage, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, along with the Seminarians of the St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary gathered in the great room for prayer. On this, their final day at the orphanage, Archbishop Daniel served a Moleben to the Birth-Giver of God, praying for the health and wellbeing of the children, staff, and administrators of the orphanage, as well as for the benefactors and supporters of the Charitable Mission of the UOC of the USA.

The Senior Ukrainian Orthodox League held it's annual convention on July 24, 2021 via video teleconference.
The convention was originally planned to take place in Philadelphia, but in-person Chapter participation across the country was predicted to be low due to COVID-19 concerns.

Parishioners and friends joined with the Ukrainian American Veterans to remember U.S. service members who perished in battle and U.S. veterans who have reposed in the Lord on Memorial Day, 2021 at Oakland Cemetery. Father Taras celebrated a memorial litia in their memory and Post Commander Edward Zetick gave a brief address, remembering UAV members who perished in the past 12 months. The UAV placed flags on the graves of Ukrainian-American veterans, per their custom. A memorial litia was also celebrated at the Cathedral on Sunday, May 30th, at the end of the Divine Liturgy. Memory Eternal!
Sunday, May 23 was a special day for four young ladies of our parish as they experienced the sacrament of Holy Confession for the first time. God bless Katerina, Lila, Marta, and Emily and grant them many years!

Табір Всіх Святих Відкривається 2021 Camping Program Season Christ is Risen!
We are very excited to announce the summer 2021 programs for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA Camping Ministry at All Saints Camp.
In keeping with the best practices with Covid-19 prevention as specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Camp Association , we have made some modifications to our normal camp schedule and program. Camp will look and feel slightly different this summer, but the utmost thought has been put into planning a safe and fun experience for all campers!. Some of the adjustments for this year include:
Shorter program duration Half capacity of campers per cabin (ex. 4 campers + 1 staff per cabin for DCSC and TC; 1 family per cabin for MM/DM and St. Nicholas) Cohort groups for activities, cabin assignment and meals Social distancing and mask requirements as deemed necessary Assigned drop-off and pick-up times Adjusted program ages for THIS YEAR ONLY For the full plan, you may go to the OYM website.
The dates for our programs are as follows:
Virtual Week for DCSC and TC - June 28 - July 2 Diocesan Church School Camp – July 5 – 9 – Youth ages 10 - 13 Teenage Conference – July 11 – 16 – Youth ages 14 – 18(current High School Graduate) Mommy & Me/Daddy & Me – August 8 -11 – children ages 4 -9 and parents St. Nicholas Program - August 13 -16 – Special Needs Family Camp all ages Family Fest – September 3 -6 – All ages of faithful We hope to announce additional programs as the summer progresses.

Відповідно до найкращих практик профілактики Covid-19, визначених Центрами контролю та профілактики захворювань та Американською Асоціацією Кумпінгу, ми внесли деякі зміни в наш звичайний графік табору. Табір буде виглядати дещо по-іншому,ніж зазвичай, але найбільше зусиль було вкладено в планування безпечного та веселого досвіду для всіх відпочиваючих!
Ось деякі коригування, які будуть в цьому сезоні: • Коротша тривалість програми • Половина місць дітей в кабінці (напр. 4 дітей + 1член персоналу в кабінці для Дитячого Церковного Шкільного Табору та для Конференції Підлітків; 1 сім'я в кабінці для Мама і Я, Тато і Я, та для програми св. Миколая) • Когортні групи для занять та призначення кабінок • Якщо буде необхідність - зберігати соціальну дистанцію та носити маски. • Буде призначено час для заїзду та виїзду • Змінена вікова категорія програми - ТІЛЬКИ ЦЬОГО РОКУ

For the second year, "Bells Across Pennsylvania", an initiative of the Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association, will take place on May 2, 2021 at 7pm. The threefold purpose of the initiative is:
1. To recognize and honor first responders, healthcare workers, and employees of grocery stores, pharmacies and other life-sustaining businesses who have maintained essential services while at risk of infection from COVID-19
2. To show solidarity with elected officials and residents of municipalities across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, all of whom are fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines together
3. To demonstrate a collective resolve that Pennsylvanians will prevail over COVID-19 and work tirelessly to ensure that their businesses and civic life will thrive once again.
All Pennsylvanians and churches are encouraged to ring bells for three minutes — one minute for each purpose listed above.

Saint Nicholas Virtual Gathering 2020 - 12/30/2020
In lieu of our traditional Saint Nicholas Day program, both children and adults enjoyed a virtual celebration on December 19, 2020! We learned about the life of Saint Nicholas and how he is remembered across the globe, sang songs, and had lots of fun as one family in Christ!

RE: FULL CLOSING OF ALL PARISH CHURCHES DURING THE COVID19/CORONAVIRUS THREAT
Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in our Lord,
CHRIST IS AMONGST US! IS AND ALWAYS SHALL BE!
The continued and worsening threat of the COVID-19/CORONAVIRUS continues to affect the lives of each and every one of us. We have asked our clergy since the beginning of this threat to serve Divine Liturgy in their churches with the assistance of a cantor or reader. We have directed that ALL of our faithful 65 years of age and older MUST NOT participate in these Divine Liturgies and we have strongly urged that ALL OUR FAITHFUL REMAIN TO PRAY AT HOME. We have suggested to all our faithful that many parishes are live streaming the Liturgy on Facebook and they should contact their priest or parish board about whether or not their parish is one of these.
Today’s statistics – Sunday 22 March – about the people hospitalized with the virus are astonishing. They clearly exhibit that the virus is a threat NOT just to the elderly. 40% of those hospitalized are under the age of 55. 20% of those hospitalized are under age 20! Having spoken with many of our clergy today, we have learned that just too many of the faithful have not taken our directives and urgings to heart and decided to attend Divine Liturgy on this third Sunday of Great Lent. We realize that they – you – did so out of a sincere desire and need to participate in the Divine Liturgy, glorifying God in the Holy Trinity, offering gratitude for the blessings in their lives and beseeching protection from this virus threat for themselves, their families and all mankind. However, because there were simply too many of you present in some of our churches – words we could not have imagined coming forth from our mouths, let alone our hearts prior to these days – we are obliged to direct that all our churches are now closed for public worship for the duration of this threat to all of us. We make this decision also in consideration of the ever-increasing restrictions being announced daily by federal, state and local government bodies. We are headed into the most dangerous part of the coronavirus threat and we all must be extremely careful.
We do permit our clergy to celebrate Divine Liturgy in their churches – behind closed doors – with at least a cantor or reader to assist them. We ask these clergy to use their own good sense, in particular about their own health and the health of the cantor or reader when making a decision about whether to serve or not. Please Fathers, follow your own conscience in making your decision. Be certain about one thing, however – NONE OF THE FAITHFUL FROM YOUR PARISH OR FROM ANYWHERE ELSE MAY BE PRESENT IN CHURCH FOR THE LITURGY. This permission is granted so that the Eucharist and our special prayers may be offered in “behalf of all and for all” our faithful and all mankind.
We understand that the desire to be at Divine Liturgy is to receive the Holy Eucharist – the Blood and Body of our Lord – in Communion from the Holy Chalice as the source of all healing. We learned something else today, however, that has not been expanded upon in the media and it heavily influenced our decision announced here. The fact is that those who have this day been diagnosed with the virus were actually infected last week or the week before. This means that they probably spread the virus to others for a week or two without experiencing any symptoms of the disease. It is what we might be carrying upon ourselves or within ourselves – without our knowledge – that may hurt others by simple proximity. Hence, this letter.
All our faithful can be assured that they will be prayed for during the live streamed Liturgy from St. Andrew Memorial Church each Sunday. The stream on this third Sunday of Great Lent had almost 400 people present for the entire Liturgy and as these words are written, over 13,500 others have viewed or watched the video of the Liturgy in just the four hours after the Liturgy completed and Facebook data tells us that in total 26,000 people were reached by the video. We invite you to join us on the Sundays ahead. As we explained in an earlier letter, dearly beloved, you certainly will not suffer any spiritual penalty during this crisis. Our Lord’s compassion goes far beyond our comprehension and He will certainly embrace us at all times as we pray in our individual homes or as we watch the live streaming of Divine Liturgy on Facebook and YouTube.
Morning Prayers at 7:30 a.m., Evening Prayers at 9:00 a.m. with special prayers for those afflicted with the virus and for our medical professionals are already live streaming from Three Hierarchs Chapel on St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Seminary’s Facebook page. Sunday Divine Liturgy will continue to be live streamed from the Memorial Church at 10:00 a.m. on both the Seminary Facebook page and the Facebook page of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. It also appears that a live stream will also be possible on YouTube. We love you all, our dear spiritual children. God has entrusted you all to our spiritual care and we have agonized over all the continually increasing restrictions we have had to issue in that care. We assure you of our endless prayers for each and every one of you – not only during crisis times. We are people of faith and that faith will continue to bring upon us the embrace of our Loving Lord. Pray each day the powerful words: “The Father is my Hope, the Son is my Refuge and the Holy Spirit is my Protection.” The Grace inspired into our lives through each of the Mysteries/Sacraments will enable us to remain faithful. Allow that Grace to work within you each moment of your life so that it will flow forth from you into the lives of all around you. Christ IS amongst us – eternally!

Дорогі улюблені брати і сестри у Христі,
ХРИСТОС ПОСЕРЕД НАС! Є І ЗАВЖДИ БУДЕ!
Подальша загроза COVID-19 / КОРОНАВІРУСУ продовжує впливати на життя кожного з нас. Ми звертались до нашого духовенства з початку цієї загрози, звершувати Божественну Літургію у церквах за допомоги дяка чи читача. Ми наголошували, щоб ВСІ наші вірні віком старше 65 років НЕ ПОВИННІ брати участь у цих Божественних Літургіях, і ми наполегливо закликали ВСІХ НАШИХ ВІРНИХ ЗАЛИШАТИСЯ І МОЛИТИСЯ ВДОМА. Ми наголошували нашим вірним, про можливості парафій показувати богослужіння в прямому ефірі через Facebook, і щоб звернутися до свого священика чи парафіяльної управи щодо того, як парафії зможуть вести трансляцію.
Сьогоднішня статистика вражає - неділя 22 березня – про кількість госпіталізованих людей з вірусом, і чітко демонструює, що вірус загрожує НЕ лише людям похилого віку. 40% госпіталізованих є віком до 55 років. 20% госпіталізованих - молодші 20 років! Сьогодні, поговоривши з багатьма нашими священнослужителями, ми дізналися, що занадто багато вірних не прийняли до уваги наші вказівки та настанови і вирішили відвідати Божественну Літургію в цю Третю Неділю Великого Посту. Ми усвідомлюємо, що вони зробили це з щирого бажання та необхідності брати участь у Божественній Літургії, прославляючи Бога в Тройці Святій, дякуючи за благословення в вашому житті та благаючи захисту від цієї загрози вірусу для себе, ваших родин та всього людства. Однак, через занадто велику присутність у деяких наших церквах - слова, які ми не могли собі уявити, що будуть виходити з наших уст, не говорячи уже до цих днів про наші серця, - ми зобов'язані постановити, що всі наші церкви від тепер закриті для загального служіння протягом усієї цієї загрози для всіх нас. Ми приймаємо це рішення також враховуючи постійно зростаючі обмеження, які щодня оголошуються федеральними, державними та місцевими органами влади. Ми наближаємося до найбільш небезпечної частини коронавірусної загрози, і всі ми повинні бути надзвичайно обережними.
Ми благословляємо нашому духовенству звершувати Божественну Літургію у своїх церквах - за закритими дверима - і щоб дяк або читач допомагали їм. Сьогодні ми навчились чогось іншого, що не було поширене ЗМІ, і це сильно вплинуло на наше рішення, проголошене тут. І дані, які нам повідомляє Facebook, що загалом відео переглянули 26 000 людей. Ми запрошуємо вас приєднатись до нас у наступну неділю. URGENT DIRECTIVE CONCERNING LITURGICAL SERVICES IN ALL PARISHES OF THE UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE USA AND DIASPORA

RE: CONCERNING ALL LITURGICAL SERVICES AND OTHER PRECAUTIONS IN ALL PARISHES DURING THE PANDEMIC CRISIS
Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in our Lord:
CHRIST IS AMONG US! HE IS AND ALWAYS SHALL BE!
As your hierarchs, deeply concerned primarily about your spiritual well-being, but also greatly anxious about your physical and emotional health, we have been monitoring on a nearly 24-hour basis all the news, comments and recommendations of the scientists from the Center for Disease and Prevention Control and the National Institute of Health about the Coronavirus. When we say on a 24-hour basis, we are not exaggerating because we have been spending many sleepless nights praying for and worrying about you, while trying to decipher the constant stream of information being provided about the virus, and to determine what our best course of action should be with regards to liturgical gatherings in our parish communities. We believe that it is absolutely necessary for you, along with us, to become fully informed about the Coronavirus or COVID-19 because the simple fact is that it is considered to be perhaps the greatest threat to humankind ever. We need to act in response to the threat and this letter comes as the direct result of our mutual discernment and prayer.
Recently, we issued “Further Directives” to you, our clergy, and through the clergy to you, the faithful, concerning the necessity of the cleanliness and sanitization of our Church buildings and all the liturgical utensils utilized during any of our worship services. We especially concentrated on the responsibilities of the parish priests in this regard, on both personal and parochial levels. These directives remain in place. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE VERY RAPIDLY FORTHCOMING INFORMATION ABOUT THE PANDEMIC AND A MORE POWERFUL WARNINGS AGAINST PHYSICAL PROXIMITY BETWEEN PEOPLE, WE MUST NOW CHANGE OUR DIRECTIVES AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO YOU. WE DO SO, NOT OUT OF A SENSE OF PANIC OR FEAR, BUT RATHER FROM A LOVING CONCERN FOR YOU. THEREFORE:
1. We direct that ALL liturgical worship services in our parish communities, except for Sunday Divine Liturgy, must be suspended until further notice.We direct all our beloved and devoted clergy to celebrate Divine Liturgy every Sunday morning, without a choir, but with the participation of at least a reader or cantor. The Eucharist MUST be offered “in behalf of all and for all” during this horrific crisis. We will not close the doors of our parish churches in the face of our faithful who wish to participate in the Liturgy but the restrictions of remaining at least six feet apart must be followed as per regulations set by federal, state and local governments and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
However, we do direct that ALL our faithful over the age of 65 completely refrain from visiting their parish churches because they are the most vulnerable and susceptible to the pandemic virus. Further, regarding all other faithful, we can no longer recommend that “those who exhibit no symptoms continue to gather for services”. THE RISK OF INDIVIDUAL “SELF-DETERMINATION” OF ILLNESS OR SYMPTOMS OF THE VIRUS, A FLU OR SIMPLY A COLD – INCLUDING YOUR OWN HIERARCHS – ARE SIMPLY NOT ACCURATE IN TOO MANY INSTANCES. We have canceled all our own scheduled parish visitations throughout this pandemic crisis, so that no obligation is perceived by the faithful to be present to welcome their hierarchs.
2. We realize that many of our faithful are very concerned about not being able to regularly receive the Holy Eucharist – the Body and Blood of our Lord – in Holy Communion. We must never doubt the Compassion of our Lord, which exceeds anything we humans can comprehend, concerning such crisis circumstances as the present. We certainly will not suffer spiritually from a forced absence from community worship and the Eucharist, whatever the length of the crisis. Please stay home and self-quarantine for your own protection and that of others.
3. As we previously stated, our clergy, our Spiritual Fathers, must continue to be most attentive to what you see in the lives of your faithful sons and daughters. Be present to them! Be ready to visit them with the Sacraments when necessary but take all precautions when doing so in order to protect both yourself and those spiritual children. We continue to strongly urge that you do, indeed, FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE CDC GUIDELINES (www.cdc.gov), SO THAT YOU CAN EDUCATE YOUR FAITHFUL ABOUT THEM.
We are saddened at the need to issue these directives to you, dear Brothers and Sisters. It seems to be so incredibly contradictory and counter intuitive to all we are and all we have ever done in our Spiritual Guidance of our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora. In decades, centuries and millennia past the speed of communication and the provision of information about such horrific dangers as the present Pandemic of Coronavirus/COVID-19 would have remained unknown until years and years after they ended. Perhaps it is a blessing gifted to us by God in the Holy Trinity to comprehend that with which we are confronted today. May we all do what we can to avoid being infected with the virus and just as important to avoid being conduits through which it is spread by close contact with others. We are social beings and we need each other, but those needs must these days be satisfied through impersonal contact by telephone, video-conferencing and other safe means. We cannot in good conscience recommend heavy reliance upon the most prominent versions of social media because of some pretty indecent, inaccurate and deceiving things we have seen there. However, we are aware of some possibilities of our parishes live-streaming services there. Please refer to your parish or neighboring parishes to determine which are doing so.
Throughout all this time of threat, illness, concern and anxiety let us remain faithful witnesses of God’s LOVE and COMPASSION for us. Let us in all circumstances pray for His embrace of all humanity. Let us beseech the Mother of God for her protection and that she will intercede with her Son and our God beseeching His healing touch on all our lives. Let us contemplate the two new and greatest commandments of all: “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)
Loving God and loving our neighbor are one and the same. We are not instructed to “love our neighbor as yourself” in terms of what we see in the mirror or whatever self-concept we have. We are called to love our neighbor as also being created “in the image of God”, reflecting that image to the world just as we must do every second of our lives. If we love our neighbor, then ours is to protect our neighbor during the times of threat such as today. That means we must refrain from the physical contact through which a virus can be transmitted.
We fervently pray for you all every day of our lives, our dear clergy and faithful – witnesses to God. Please pray for our continued understanding of what it is that we must do to help ensure your safety and that of the world’s. May the Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Love of God the Father and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. “The Father is our Hope, the Son is our Refuge and the Holy Spirit is our Protection.” We embrace you in the certainty of all this…

Як ваші ієрархи, ми глибоко стурбовані, насамперед, вашим духовним життям, а також занепокоєні вашим фізичним та емоційним буттям. Ми майже 24 години спостерігаємо за новинами, коментарями та рекомендаціями вчених з Відділу Контролю Захворювань та Національного Інституту Охорони Здоров’я щодо Коронавірусу. Коли ми кажемо цілодобово, повірте - не перебільшуємо, тому що ми проводимо багато безсонних ночей в молитві за вас і переживаємо та намагаємось збагнути постійний потік інформації про вірус та визначити найкращий підхід щодо літургійних богослужінь у парафіяльних громадах. Ми вважаємо, що всім нам абсолютно необхідно бути проінформованими про Коронавірус або COVID-19, оскільки вважається, що він є чи не найбільшою загрозою для людства. Ми повинні діяти у відповідь на загрозу, і цей лист є прямим результатом нашого взаємного обізнання та молитви.
Нещодавно ми видали «Подальші Вказівки» нашому духовенству, і через духовенство усім вірним, щодо необхідної чистоти та санітарії у Церквних будівлях та всієї богослужбової утварі, які використовуються під час наших богослужінь. Ми особливо зобов’язали парафіяльних священиків у цьому плані, як на особистому, так і на парафіяльному рівні. Ці вказівки залишаються в силі. Ми також, закликали вірних продовжувати молитися за богослужіннями у своїх парафіях, якщо ви здорові та не проявляєте жодних симптомів хвороби, молитися за тих, хто насправді ХВОРИЙ та хто упокоївся черех наслідки вірусу. ЧЕРЕЗ ШВИДКЕ НАДХОДЖЕННЯ ІНФОРМАЦІЇ ПРО ПАНДЕМІЮ ТА БІЛЬШЕ ЗАСТЕРЕЖЕНЬ ПРО КОНТАКТИ МІЖ ЛЮДЬМИ, МИ ПОВИННІ ЗАРАЗ ЗМІНИТИ НАШІ ВКАЗІВКИ ТА РЕКОМЕНДАЦІЇ ДЛЯ ВАС. 1. Ми наголошуємо, що ВСІ літургійні богослужіння в наших парафіяльних громадах, окрім Недільної Божественної Літургії, повинні бути призупинені до подальшого повідомлення. Ми наголошуємо нашому відданому духовенству звершувати Божественну Літургію у неділю вранці, без хору, але за участю принаймні псаломщика чи дяка. Євхаристія ПОВИННА звершуватися "за всіх і за все" під час цієї страшної кризи. Ми не будемо закривати двері наших парафіяльних церков перед нашими вірними, які бажають брати участь у Літургії, але кількість людей та обмеження відстані між ними не менше шести футів повинні дотримуватися відповідно до обмежень встановлених федеральними, державними та місцевими органами влади та Відділом Контролю Захворювань (CDC).
Однак ми наголошуємо, щоб ВСІ наші вірні віком старші 65 років повністю утримувалися від відвідування своїх парафіяльних церков, оскільки вони є найбільш вразливими та чутливими до пандемії вірусу. РИЗИК САМОМУ “ВИЗНАЧАТИ” ХВОРОБУ ТА СИМПТОМИ ВІРУСА, ГРИП ЧИ ПРОСТУДИ – НАВІТЬ І ІЄРАРХАМ – Є НЕ ТОЧНІ У БАГАТЬОХ ВИПАДКАХ. Ми відмінили всі заплановані відвідини парафій у продовж усієї пандемічної кризи, щоб вірні не були зобов'язані своєю присутністю для того, щоб вітати своїх ієрархів.
2. Ми розуміємо, що багато наших вірних стурбовані тим, що не зможуть регулярно приступати до Святої Євхаристії - Тіла і Крові Господа нашого - у Святому Причасті. Ми ніколи не повинні сумніватися у Довготерпеливості Господа, яке перевищує все, що ми можемо збагнути, стосовно таких кризових обставин як зараз. Ми, звичайно, духовно не постраждаємо від вимушеної відсутності у спільному служінні та Євхаристії у час тривалості кризи. Будь ласка, залишайтеся вдома на карантині для власного захисту та захисту інших.
3. Як ми вже заявляли раніше нашому духовенству, вони повинні бути найбільш уважними та вбачати, що потрібно в житті їхніх вірних синів і дочок. Будьте з ними. Будьте готові відвідати їх із Святими Тайнами, коли це буде необхідно, але будьте обережні виконуючи це, щоб захистити і себе і цих духовних дітей. Ми продовжуємо інтенсивно наполягати на тому, щоб ви дійсно ОЗНАЙОМИЛИСЯ З ВКАЗІВКАМИ ВІДДІЛУ ОХОРОНИ ЗДОРОВ’Я (www.cdc.gov) І МОГЛИ ДАВАТИ НАСТАНОВИ ВАШИМ ПАРАФІЯНАМ.
Нам прикро за те, що необхідним кроком мусять бути ці вказівки вам, дорогі брати і сестри. Це настільки неймовірно суперечливо і протилежно до всього, хто ми є, і всього, що ми коли-небудь робили в своєму духовному провідництві нашої Святої Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори. Протягом минулих десятиліть, століть і тисячоліть швидкість спілкування та подання інформації про такі жахливі небезпеки, як нинішня Пандемія Коронавірусу/COVID-19, залишалася б невідомою роками і навіть після її закінчення. Можливо, це благословення, дано нам Богом у Святій Тройці, щоб збагнути те, з чим ми сьогодні стикаємось. Нехай кожен робить все можливе, щоб не заразитися вірусом, і так само важливо, щоб не бути особистостями, які його розповсюджують, адже він передається при тісному контакті з іншими. Нам потрібне спілкування один з одним, але ці спілкування повинні бути зроблені в наш час безособово через телефон, відеоконференції та інші засоби спілкування. Ми не можемо сумлінно зарекомендувати чи сильно покладатися на визначні версії соціальних мереж, тому що досить непристойні, неточні та обманливі речі ми зауважуємо. Однак ми знаємо про деякі хороші можливості наших парафій показувати богослужіння в прямому ефірі. Звертайтеся до своєї місцевої парафії чи до сусідніх парафій, щоб знати, як це робити.
У час загрози, хвороби, занепокоєння та тривоги, ми залишаємося вірними свідками Божої ЛЮБОВІ та ДОВГОТЕРПЕЛИВОСТІ до нас. Давайте за будь-яких обставин молитися щоб Він обійняв усе людство. Будемо просити Божу Матірі за Її захист, і щоб вона благала свого Сина, а нашого Бога, про сцілення у нашому житті. Розглянемо дві нові та найбільші заповіді з усіх: “Перша з усіх заповідей: слухай, Ізраїлю! ГОСПОДЬ Бог наш є ГОСПОДЬ єдиний. І полюби ГОСПОДА Бога твого всім серцем твоїм, і всією душею твоєю, і всім розумінням твоїм, і всією силою твоєю, — ось перша заповідь! І друга подібна до неї: полюби ближнього твого, як самого себе. Більшої за ці заповіді немає.” (Мк. 12:30-31)
Любити Бога і любити ближнього - це одне і те саме. Нам не сказано що “любити ближнього як себе» з цієї точки зору, що відображає нас чи будь-яку само-концепцію у нас. Ми покликані любити свого ближнього, як створеного“за образом Божим”, відображаючи цей образ у світі кожної секунди свого життя. Якщо ми любимо свого ближнього, то ми повинні захищати свого ближнього в час небезпеки, яка є зараз. Це означає, що ми повинні утримуватися від контакту з людьми, через який може передаватися вірус.
Ми щиро молимось за вас кожного дня нашого життя, наше дороге духовенство та вірні - свідки перед Богом. Будь ласка, моліться за наше постійне розуміння того, що ми повинні робити задля вашої безпеки та безпеки у світі. Нехай благодать Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, Любов Бога Отця та Причастя Святого Духа буде з усіма вами. "Уповання моє – Отець, пристановище моє – Син, захист мій Дух Святий." Дорогі Брати і Сестри у Христі: ХРИСТОС ПОСЕРЕД НАС! Є І БУДЕ!
Слова цього традиційного привітання та відповідь між Православними Християнами є могутнім проголошенням нашої твердої віри в те, що Син Божий, Друга Особа Пресвятої Тройці, перебуває з нами завжди та усюди, зокрема, коли регулярно приймаємо Його Найсвятіше Тіло і Кров в Святій Тайні Євхаристії. Ми можемо бути впевнені в цьому незалежно від того, з чим ми стикаємося під час земного життя, будь то щось, що надає нам велику радість чи щось, що представляє загрозу для нас, як цей смертоносний вірус, який поширюється по всьому світу, на даний момент.
Одна мирянка нашої Церкви, котра нещодавно спілкувалася з нами, сказала: "Ось знову!" Вона не легковажно говорила про реальну загрозу коронавірусу. Швидше за все, вона констатує факт, що людство протягом свого існування стикалося з жахливими чумами та інфекційними хворобами. Вона перерахувала подібні хвороби, такі як Чорна чума, Бубонна чума, вірус Західного Нілу, Пташиний грип, вірус Ебола та Свинячий грип і інші випадки; та одночасно висловила щиру надію, що люди не будуть дивитись на цю нову загрозу – коронавірусу, з відношенням нібито "нічого страшного". Ми приєднуємося до її слів, з надією і закликаємо все наше духовенство та вірних старанно вживати всіх заходів у своєму особистому та громадському житті, щоб захистити себе та інших людей від поширення цього смертельного вірусу.

Що стосується Літургійних богослужінь в наших Церквах, ми молимось, щоб ви не переставали (якщо немаєте симптомів захворювання), на основі страху, відвідувати спільні богослужіння - разом як сини і дочки Христові - молилися з Богородицею до Нього, про захист в час цієї кризи. Ми також повинні бути готові, як парафіяльні громади в Христі, звертатися до конкретних органів у своїх місцевостях, які надають необхідну допомогу для тих, хто страждає цим вірусом. Ми віримо, що наша спільна молитва, зокрема під час Великого Посту, засвідчить перед Богом нашу віру в Його Силу, щоб викорінити цю загрозу для людства.
Збираючись в наших церквах для богослужінь, ми вважаємо, що помічним може бути обмеження фізичного контакту з традиційними богослужбовими виразами віри - нашими святими Іконами, - це якщо не передбачено відповідного догляду за ними – себто протирання до і після кожного молитовного прикладання до ікони. У цей час невизначеності цілком належним буде поклонитися або звершити поклон перед Іконами, щоб висловити свою любов до Господа та святих, які подають приклад, як ми повинні жити у своїму житті. Ми завжди знаходим великий духовний затишок під час наших подорожей до Святої Землі та коли відвідуємо там храми, і стаємо свідками, як Християни вшановують Ікони та торкаючись, закликають до себе та на себе заступництво/опіку, прагнучи зодягнутися у Благодать та вірність святих, щоб вони могли наслідувати їх у всіх своїх словах і вчинках.
Ми відчуваємо особливу потребу звернути увагу на Святу Євхаристію - прийняття Святого Тіла та Крові Христа Господа нашого - у Святому Причасті. Ми повинні у такі часи, як зараз, дорогі брати і сестри ніколи не сумніватися у силі Святого Причастя. Воно містить справжнє ЖИТТЯ та справжню ЛЮБОВ, завдяки яким жодна перешкода не може увійти в наше життя. Коли загальна лжиця занурюється в Чашу після причастя кожної людини, вона очищається Кров’ю Господа і таке "очищення" є поза нашим розумінням в людських термінах. Протягом усієї історії нашої Церкви понад два тисячоліття ми не можемо згадати жодного свідчення про те, що будь-яка хвороба коли-небудь поширювалася через Чашу, що містить Пречисте Тіло і Кров Господа нашого Ісуса Христа. Мабуть, найпереконливіший факт тут полягає в тому, що якби через Причастя справді поширювалися хвороби, ми, безумовно, регулярно молилися за упокій душ десятки тисяч і більше дияконів та священиків, які протягом останніх 2000 років споживають Чаші, після причастя вірних по завершенні сотні тисяч Божественних Літургій протягом всієї нашої історії. Дорогі возлюблені, це наша віра, і якщо ми втратимо цю віру, ми піддаємося серйозній небезпеці далеко за межі фізичної небезпеки вірусу.
Ми впевнені, що так само, як попередні віруси та інші загрози людству були переможені, ми станемо свідками того ж сьогодні. Давайте подамо зразкові приклади віри та відношення один до одного - не лише протягом усієї тривалості цієї загрози - але й протягом усього нашого життя. Ми можемо творити чудеса завдяки цій вірі і внаслідок цього з радістю закликати інших до Виноградника Христового. Ви повсякденно в наших молитвах, і ми просимо ваших молитов за нас. Апостол Яків чітко говорить: “Чи страждає хто з вас? Нехай молиться. Чи тішиться хтось? Нехай співає псалми. Чи хворіє хто з вас? Нехай покличе пресвітерів Церкви, і над ним хай помоляться, намастивши його оливою в Господнє Ім’я. І МОЛИТВА ВІРИ ВЗДОРОВИТЬ НЕДУЖОГО, І ГОСПОДЬ ЙОГО ПІДІЙМЕ.” (Як 5: 13-15)

TO: THE BELOVED CLERGY AND FAITHFUL OF OUR HOLY UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE USA
RE: THE ONSET OF A NEW VIRUS STRAIN CALLED CORONAVIRUS OR COVID-19
Dear Brothers and Sister in our Lord,
CHRIST IS AMONGST US! HE IS AND ALWAYS SHALL BE!
The words of this traditional greeting and response between Orthodox Christians are a powerful proclamation of our firm belief that the Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity remains with us at all times and in all places, in particular having received His Most Holy Body and Blood in the Eucharist on a regular basis. We can be assured of this regardless of anything we face during this earthly pilgrimage, whether it is something that brings us overwhelming joy or something that poses a threat to us, like the deadly virus spreading throughout the world as we type these words.
One faithful member of our Church contacted us recently and the first words out of her mouth were: “Here we go again!” She was not making light of the real threat that the coronavirus is. Rather, she is stating a fact that mankind has been faced with horrific plagues and communicable diseases throughout its existence. She enumerated the likes of the Black plague, the Bubonic plague, the West Nile virus, the BIRD flu, the Ebola virus and the Swine flu among other instances and she expressed her sincere hope that people will not look at this new threat of the coronavirus with a “no big deal” attitude. We join her in that hope and we urge all of our clergy and faithful to diligently take all measures in their personal and communal lives to protect themselves and others from the spread of this deadly virus.
AS YOUR HIERARCHS, WE DO NOT PRETEND TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO INSTRUCT YOU REGARDING THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS YOU ALL SHOULD TAKE IN THE DAYS AND WEEKS AHEAD TO PROTECT YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILIES, ALONG WITH THE HUMAN COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. FOR SUCH INSTRUCTIONS WE URGE YOU TO GO TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL – www.cdc.gov SO THAT YOU CAN EDUCATE YOURSELVES THE STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE IN YOUR DAILY LIVES. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE IN DOING THIS.
With regard to Liturgical Worship in our Churches, we pray that if you are healthy and show no symptoms of illness, you do not excuse yourselves based on fear from the absolutely necessary common worship – together as the sons and daughters of Christ – to pray along with the Mother of God for His protection during this crisis and to be prepared as parish families in Christ to reach out to the particular agencies in your local area that are providing care and necessities for those who are afflicted with this virus. We believe that our common prayer, in particular during this Great Lenten season, will offer a profound witness to God about our faith in His Power to eradicate this threat to mankind.
As we gather in our local churches for worship, we believe it might be wise to limit physical contact with the traditional liturgical expressions of faith in reality – our holy Icons – unless provision is made to clean them before and after each veneration – other than just a dry cloth. During this time of uncertainty, it will be altogether proper to bow or prostrate ourselves before the Icons to express our love for the Lord and the Saints who provide the example for the way we should live our lives. We have always found great spiritual comfort during our visits to the Holy Land and the churches there, when we witnessed faithful Christians venerating Icons and waving from the Icons toward themselves (a “come here” type of wave) seeking to pull the Grace and faithfulness of the Saints being venerated into themselves so that they might emulate them in all their words and deeds.
We feel an urgent need to comment most specifically on the Holy Eucharist – receiving the Holy Body and Blood of Christ our Lord – in Holy Communion. We must during times like the present, never doubt in the power of the Chalice, dear brothers and sisters. It contains true LIFE and true LOVE by which no harm could ever enter our lives. When the common spoon of communion is dipped into the Chalice following the communion of one individual, it is cleansed by the Blood of our Lord beyond our broadest comprehension of what “cleansing” is in human terms. Throughout all the history of our more than two millennium Church, we can recall no thread of witness or even a shadow of one, indicating that any disease has ever been spread through the Chalice containing the Precious Body and Blood of our Lord. Perhaps the most convincing fact here is that if the Chalice did, indeed, spread disease, we would certainly be praying regularly for the repose of the souls of tens of thousands or more deacons and priests who, throughout the past 2000 years have consumed the full Chalices following communion of the faithful during hundreds of thousands of Divine Liturgies throughout our history. This is our faith, dearly beloved, and if we lose that faith, we are in grave danger far beyond the physical danger of a virus.
We have confidence that just as the previous viruses and other threats to mankind have finally been defeated, we will witness the same today. Let us be exemplary examples of faith and action to one another – not only throughout the duration of the present threat - but throughout our lives. We can work miracles by that faith and in the resulting joy, draw others in to Christ’s Vineyard. You all are in our prayers daily and we ask for yours for ourselves. St. James states clearly: “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing Psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. AND THE PRAYER OF FAITH WILL SAVE THE SICK, AND THE LORD WILL RAISE HIM UP.” (James 5:13-15)

It is with great sadness that we announce that a beloved member of our parish family for many, many years, +Olga Sawchuk, has fallen asleep in the Lord. +Olga was the wife of +Dr. Steven Sawchuk, our esteemed former choir director, and the daughter-in-law of our former pastor +Fr. John Sawchuk. +Olga was herself a member of the Alexander Koshetz Choir for more than 60 years, and often was a featured soprano soloist. +Olga was a member of the Sisterhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a prominent member and supporter of the Ukrainian Orthodox League, and the mother of former UOL Jr. Chapter President, +Lynn Sawchuk of blessed memory. We offer our condolences to son Steven, daughter-in-law Alexis, son James, and grandchildren Alexandra & Steven. May her memory be eternal!
+Olga's viewing will be on Friday, October 7, from 6:30PM - 8PM, with a Panakhyda being served at 7:30PM at the Cathedral, 6740 N. 5th Street in Philadelphia. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, October 8, at 9AM. The Funeral Service will begin at 10AM. She will be laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia.
Members of the Alexander Koshetz Choir are invited and encouraged to sing for the Panakhyda and Funeral Service.
